to wait on

To await something or someone

This means staying in one place until a person or thing arrives or something happens. For example, you stay at home until your friend comes. You do not leave or move because you are expecting someone or something to come or happen soon.
In restaurants, "wait on" can also mean serving customers, like when a waiter brings food to your table.
