backs, backed, backing
to back up
phrasal verb
To move in reverse, especially a vehicle
- 1Please back up the car a little.
- 2She had to back up to let the truck pass.
This means to make something, like a car, go backwards instead of forwards. For example, when you want to leave a parking space, you move the car in the opposite direction from where it was going before.
When you hear someone say "Can you back up a little?" in a crowded place, they are asking you to move backwards to give more space.
